About The Rowan
The Rowan, located at 338 Potrero Avenue in San Francisco's Mission District, is a modern condominium complex that seamlessly blends industrial design with contemporary living. Completed in 2017, this development by Handel Architects features 70 condominium homes and ground-floor retail along Potrero Avenue, revitalizing a site previously occupied by a car wash.
Building Features and Architectural Design
- Industrial-Inspired Design: The Rowan's concrete exoskeleton is a nod to the nearby shipbuilding and container cranes on the city’s waterfront. The exposed structural concrete columns form an exoskeleton, reminiscent of the shipbuilding and container cranes that still exist on the city’s waterfront.
- Modern Construction: Completed in 2017, The Rowan is a new addition to the neighborhood, featuring contemporary design and construction.
- Number of Homes: The development is home to 70 condos, including 38 one-bedroom homes, 30 two-bedroom homes, and 2 three-bedroom homes. Of these, 11 are designated as on-site Below Market Rate (BMR) homes.
Location and Connectivity
- Prime Mission District Location: The Rowan is located near the Potrero Shopping Center at 16th/Potrero and also near Franklin Square Park. Homes on the west side of the building overlook Franklin Square Park, providing great views towards Twin Peaks.
- Cultural and Industrial Heritage: The neighborhood has been shaped by industry, ranging from the first iron production of Pacific Rolling Mills to the ship and submarine building efforts through two world wars.
